Usage and Price Analysis


The weighted average Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP) for March 2018 continued to decrease by around 9.5% to $17.20/MWh when comparing to Feb. The Off-Peak weighted average has decreased to $12.84, almost 15%. Month over month values for consumption has increased almost 3.85% due to cold weather and a longer month for March. The supply mix saw increase in nuclear and other, while decrease in gas, hydro, and wind generations.

Oshawa Power’s pilot project is one of several selected by the OEB to inform a redesign of the Regulated Price Plan (RPP), under which the OEB sets prices that apply to more than 90 per cent of the province’s electricity customers.  Read the article here.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) says the continued operation of the Pickering nuclear power plant until 2024 would be a benefit to Ontario’s economy, its local communities, its climate change goals and the stability of its energy system.   Read more here.

Average Utilization

The graph above shows the utilization of each generator type for the month. Please note that the IESO specifically does not post wind’s generation capability at this point in time. Thus, the graph shows forecast vs. actual generation exclusively for wind, as made available by the IESO.
