Usage and Price Analysis

Overview

The weighted average Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP) for March 2020 decreased to $13.93/MWh. The Off-Peak weighted average increased to $11.93/MWh. Month over month values for consumption has decreased 2.23%. The supply mix saw a decrease in nuclear generation and an increase in hydro generation.

OPEC deal to cut production not enough to offset even greater plunge in demand for fuel. The most current futures contract for West Texas Intermediate fell by $8 US a barrel on Apr. 20th, going as low as $10.10 US in a plunge of more than 40 per cent.  Read the article here.

The Ontario Energy Board announced Tuesday, April 14, 2020 that it will defer setting new electricity prices for households and small businesses under the Regulated Price Plan.  Read more here.

The graph above shows the utilization of each generator type for the month. Please note that the IESO specifically does not post wind’s generation capability at this point in time. Thus, the graph shows forecast vs. actual generation exclusively for wind, as made available by the IESO.
